The
present blue planet is progressing with the advancements in Science and
Technology. Production of food or any item is increasing and at the same time,
the progress is affected by various factors such as consumption, environmental
hazards, and experiments. One of the factors influencing the Food chain is the
pandemic.
Pandemic
is the global outbreak of a disease. There are many examples in history such as
cholera, influenza,
and the most recent being COVID-19. Presently,
113 million people around the world are having acute food insecurity.
Can we just imagine the effect of a pandemic in such a situation?
The central thing to get affected by the Pandemic is Food Supply. Economic
activities are disrupted which worsens existing food insecurity limiting access
to nutritious food. Illness-related labor shortages, transport interruptions, panic
purchases of food causing inflation. Restrictions of movement prevent farming
and food processing. Presently, the global problem of COVID-19 Pandemic has spread
across the world from China triggering an economic slowdown. As China
contributes 16 % to the global GDP, any shock to it causes a devaluation of the
exchange rate affecting the supply. In Nepal, transportation of goods, import
of fertilizer, and other inputs get disrupted which ultimately hampers the
supply.
A wide range of actions can support and protect food
security during a pandemic. The state should ensure emergency food
needs are met, provide nutritional support, distribute food to the most
vulnerable families, use the digital tool to improve communication on food
delivery points, distribution, and measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 like
epidemics. Policymakers must monitor avoiding tightening food-supply conditions
with creative and adaptive methods. Authorities in Nepal should Focus on the
effective method of transportation of food materials to every home with
coordination with the wards and municipalities.
New technologies can facilitate the interface between supply and
demand. Vaccines Investigation, existing treatments, management of Food
Supplies with proper precautions should be focused effectively to save the
globe.
